15 others surrender in alleged UGA fake ID ring

As of Thursday, 17 of the 20 indicted students have surrendered and subsequently booked into the Clarke County Jail. They were later released after posting bonds of varying amounts.

On Tuesday, alleged ringleaders William Finley Trosclair, 22, of UGA, and Tyler Andrew Ruby, fake id 22, formerly of Gainesville State College, surrendered at the jail and were released after each posted a $12,000 bond.

Two days after the indictments were returned, a Superior Court judge signed bench warrants for the arrests of all 20 students. The arrests stem from an exhaustive investigation by UGA police and the District Attorney’s office that began in August 2011. Couriers took photos of customers in their own dorm rooms, best fake id collected personal information for the IDs and delivered the finished product at prices that ranged from $50 to $100.

Fraudulent driver’s licenses were allegedly manufactured at the home Trosclair and Ruby shared at the Summit of Athens, a gated student community off Barnett Shoals Road.

UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said the investigation spanned several states, and students from Northwestern University, the University of Alabama and the University of Mississippi were among those indicted.

The 18 other codefendants were charged with various counts of distributing the fraudulent documents. All offenses charged by the grand jury are felonies. fake id
